Tomas Tranströmer! Sometimes good decisions are actually made! I'm so happy I could cry!

Amazon explained the de-rankings as "a ham-fisted error" and books are getting relisted.
Still, this by Richard Eoin Nash (via [ profile] copperbadge) is spot-on:

[...] it is always the GLBTQ books, the queer books, the non-normative books that get caught in the glitches, the ham-fisted errors.

Apparently has started stripping sales rankings from LGBT books. This is the explanation they gave writer Mark R. Probst:
In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller listsSince these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.

A statement that might have been a little less ludicrous if this exclusion had not so specifically targeted LGBT books while books with similar but heterosexual content still have their rankings.

Also, if it isn't already clear where I'm going with this, what the fucking fuck, I do not appreciate being told what is and what is not appropriate reading.

Learned about this here at [info]copperbadge.

Italian writer Roberto Saviano, who lives in hiding after death threats from the Naples mafia, recently had to leave Italy - even though it's possible this won't help improve his safety.

I wish there was a way for ordinary people to show the Camorra how VERY DISPLEASED this sort of thing makes us.

So apparently nobody but me were mystified about the literature prize winner. All around there has been nodding and people saying things like "oh, yes, and it's about time too." Even the betting-places had him on their list.

And interestingly, the day before the announcement Le Clézio's odds started to even out rapidly. Do we perhaps have a tiny leak in the super sekrit Academy?
