I had dinner with my mother yesterday, and for some reason the topic of maypoles came up. I mentioned something about how they're essentially just big phallic symbols. Puzzled, my mother wanted to know what a phallic symbol was. The look on her face when I explained that it was basically, well, a penis, was sublime. And then she said, "But what about the round things hanging on either side of the pole, what are ... those. Oh."
 
And then we laughed until we cried. And then we couldn't look at each other for a while. Good times.
