crazy is everywhere
Apr. 24th, 2011 05:48 pmOkay, I don't entirely understand what's happening in America these days, but as an outside observer I don't think my jaw could drop any further without causing permanent damage. The vilifying of the unions, the hysterical tone of the abortion debate, the birthers (!!), the rise of the Trump buffoon, which is ... I have no words. I naively believed Sarah "I can see Rushia from my house" Palin was as bad as it could get. But apparently not. Shocking things are routinely said about the President and nobody seems to care. Instead it's just one stupid and offensive thing after the other. Has everybody with a more moderate or liberal mindset just given up over there? Why on earth are they letting these far-right nutjobs set the tone of the debate? Is this really how Americans want the rest of the world to view them?
Of course, if someone were to claim that Europe is a shining example of truth and justice in comparison, I'd first laugh myself silly and then feel a bit sad. (We are so, so broken.) Still, when our own nutjob Berlusconi at a formal EU meeting told a German politician he'd make an excellent concentration camp guard, he was booed and ridiculed back to the hole he came from. We too have many, many flaws and problems to address, but at least there is still some sense of civility in debate and a feeling that claims must be backed up by actual goddamn facts.
